Rutland: The Hornbeam garden

A magnificent old Hornbeam tree in the client’s garden gave inspiration for the scheme. The house is a grand mix of 18th century design in local stone with a modern extension. The garden had to reflect this and enhance the grand character of the architecture. In order to open the view and maximise the view of the planting, the lawn has been centred on the new extension giving it a formal, symmetrical vista. Taking your eye across the space, a focal point of ornamental Pear trees has been added, beautifully illuminated at night. Giving a formal feel to the garden, the standard trees chosen provide amazing spring and autumn colour as well as summer foliage. Layered structural interest at different heights through evergreen hedging frames the view and gives wonderful all year structure in a horseshoe shape around the lawn.
