Stamford: The Mediterranean flow garden

With mediterranean styling, the design uses planting areas to create natural, curving gravel paths through the space to the various areas in the garden. The paved terrace benefits from the south facing aspect and is a place to enjoy the summer sun. This space is multi-use and could be used with lounge furniture, a barbecue or small a dining table with parasol or sun loungers.

The planting areas which have been maximised to give a natural and immersive feeling when sitting in the garden and a multi-stemmed tree has been included in the design to offer height and structure as well as as focal point which can be illuminated at night. The planting close to the house draws the garden pod into the garden to give an immersive feeling. The tones of the paving pick up on those of the modern garden pod structure while the gravel has a warmer feeling, complimenting the house. The fences have been painted black to make the planting stand-out and give a contemporary feeling. A trellis covered with climbing “Star jasmine” gives a green backdrop and breaks up the imposing red brick wall.

The client’s beloved butler sink has been made a focal point from the house, integrated as part of a bespoke seat and planted with water lilies to offer water in the garden for birds and insects.

Pleached hedging offers a little privacy from the overlooking house to the south-east and a raised planter gives a place to grow vegetables. Outdoor storage has also been thought aboutfor a place to put the soft furnishings over the winter months.
